Cautions

Geranium is a gentle essential oil that can be safely used even on children and dogs. However, having said that, I need to stress that all dogs are individual beings and they react differently to even the same oil. While this oil is generally considered a safe oil to use on dogs, you still need to take the necessary precautions, dilute and start off slow.

Treat all essential oils as though they are medicine and always follow the principle “less is more”. Always wash your hands after handling oils to prevent accidentally getting them into your eyes. To reduce the chances of sensitivity and organ toxicity, use an oil for no more than two weeks and then provide a rest period unless you are treating a specific disease under the guidance of a professional (such as cancer).

Essential Oils and Cats

Cats use a different system in their liver to detoxify and are particularly sensitive to essential oils that contain polyphenolic compounds. Cinnamon, oregano, clove, wintergreen, thyme and birch, which are hot oils and melaleuca (tea tree) should not be used on cats. Never put essential oils into the ear canal without professional guidance as they can damage cats’ delicate ear drums and nerves. Care is needed around eyes as well.
